So I picked up the new Samyang 135mm lens the other day. I was in the market for the Nikon 135mm F2 DC but couldn't really justify the cost just yet (to my wife). At less than half the price of the Nikon I was sold almost instantly. A helping factor in my purchase of what some might consider a lesser brand was the fact that I own and use the Samyang 85mm F1.4 lens, I actually use it a lot and love it, it's sharp and performs well, so well that I just shot a whole fashion editorial with it that will be published mid march.
So whilst on holiday in Melbourne I stumbled into a photography shop and had a browse, upon talking to one of the staff about what I was looking for he mentioned he had this new Samyang 135mm just come in, it was so new in fact that they hadn't even put it in the system yet. He had me hooked before he opened the box really.
The lens itself feels really solid, well built metal etc.. Its pretty weighty which i personally like, I don't shy away from lugging my equipment, and I don't do weddings or events so I never really hold it for that long. I attached it to my D800 in the shop and fired some shots off... I instantly loved what I saw on the tiny screen and knew that i could refine my style with this focal length.
I have no problem with manual focus only lens' I never use auto focus, so thats simple. The focus ring feels nice and stiff, smooth and easy to whip round and fine adjust, very similar to the 85mm I would say it feels slightly better in its build quality. I have only an issue with the close focus distance, I guess I would need to consider the 100mm macro for the really close beauty work, focus on lips etc, for now though the D800 files are big enough to crop...
So lets have a look at some images I took with it. I haven't actually set up any formal shots where I use this lens, these images were tagged on to the back of a couple of lookbook shoots... Although I am very happy with my results. Check it out:
Here is a screen grab of a 100% Zoom... Pretty impressive detail!
I am incredibly impressed with this lens.. At this price i'd urge anyone to give it a try!
